Members elected, reappointed to Board of Trustees

Three new members were elected to the Ƶ College Board of Trustees during its annual spring meeting March 13-14.

Mark Mahaffey of St. Petersburg, Fla., was elected to a four-year term beginning June 1. Mahaffey and his brother are co-owners of The Mahaffey Company, which is the nation’s largest rental apartment developer. His son, Thomas, is a 1997 Ƶ graduate, while his daughter, Kiley, will graduate from Ƶ in May.

Jack Lindley, Burlington, N.C., is a 1956 graduate and will fill the unexpired term of trustee William A. Hawks of Burlington, who was elected trustee emeritus. A member of the Ƶ Board of Visitors since 1988, Lindley is a leader in the Burlington community. He is involved with the United Way, the Alamance Arts Council, the Chamber of Commerce and Alamance Eldercare. He was awarded Ƶ’s prestigious Frank Holt Business Leadership Award in 2000. Lindley’s son, Jack, Jr., is a 1983 Ƶ graduate.

Leigh S. Wheeler was elected to a two-year term as youth trustee beginning June 1. Wheeler is a member of Phi Eta Sigma, Alpha Chi and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies, Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Society and the Isabella Cannon Leadership program. She has directed and produced several award-winning programs for Ƶ College Television, and has completed internships with The Learning Channel, Carolina Biological Supply and WAGA Fox 5 News in Atlanta.

Noel L. Allen, a 1969 Ƶ alumnus and Raleigh, N.C., attorney, was elected to a one-year term as board chairman. Zachary T. Walker III of Summerfield, N.C., a 1960 Ƶ graduate, will serve a one-year term as vice chair.

Eight trustees were reappointed to the board: Robert T. “Bobby” Drakeford ’86, Huntersville, N.C.; Gail M. Drew, Durham, N.C.; Allen E. Gant, Jr., Burlington, N.C.; William N.P. Herbert ’68, Charlottesville, Va.; Victoria S. Hunt, Burlington, N.C.; G. Melvin Palmer, Greensboro, N.C.; Warren G. “Dusty” Rhodes, Gibsonville, N.C.; and Robert A. Ward, Burlington, N.C.
