The session, one of the conference鈥檚 鈥淪napshot鈥� formats designed for concise, high-impact presentations, introduced a creative approach to training standardized patients (SPs) through well-produced instructional videos. The presentation emphasized how strategic use of video content can enhance clarity, performance and confidence among SPs鈥攊ndividuals who portray patients in simulated clinical scenarios for student learning.

鈥淪Ps are essential to the learning process,鈥� said Skillman. 鈥淏y crafting training videos that demonstrate effective communication, emotional expression, and the nuances of portraying various medical conditions, we鈥檙e equipping SPs with the tools to deliver more realistic and consistent performances.鈥�

The presentation also encouraged dialogue among attendees on best practices for video production, including scripting, filming, editing and incorporating feedback from both SPs and learners. Skillman and Fearnow shared lessons learned through the development process and emphasized the need for continuous improvement and collaboration in SP education.

鈥淭his kind of innovation doesn鈥檛 just benefit SPs,鈥� Fearnow noted. 鈥淚t directly enhances the student experience鈥攐ffering them more authentic interactions, which better prepares them for real-world clinical situations.鈥�

The work presented aligns closely with the mission of 乱伦视频鈥檚 Interprofessional Simulation Center, which plays a central role in preparing students from the Physician Assistant Studies, Doctor of Physical Therapy, and Nursing programs. Through immersive, hands-on simulation experiences, students apply their classroom knowledge in realistic clinical settings, fostering confidence, collaboration and clinical judgment.

Medical simulation bridges the gap between theory and practice, helping students learn from mistakes in a safe environment while developing the skills they need to deliver high-quality patient care.

鈥淪imulation brings the textbook to life鈥攁nd with innovative tools like SP training videos, we鈥檙e making that experience even richer,” said Skillman.

Srikant Vallabhajosula, associate professor of physical therapy education, was recently named a 2023 Fellow by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) at the organization’s annual conference in Denver, Colorado.

Vallabhajosula was recognized at a ceremony that was attended by past, current and future presidents and leadership of the ACSM. He joined 乱伦视频 in 2012 and his primary area of research is biomechanics of human movement. He has published more than 30 peer-reviewed publications in the domains of Sports Medicine and Exercise Science in premier journals like Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, Journal of Biomechanics. He regularly presents his work at ACSM and has mentored more than 30 students for presentations at the Annual Meetings of the ACSM.

The ACSM Fellowship is described as聽an elite member status for long-term professional members who have provided significant service to the ACSM. The ACSM promotes and integrates scientific research, education and practical applications of sports medicine and exercise science to maintain and enhance physical performance, fitness, health and quality of life.

According to ACSM, the purpose of the Fellowship is to recognize members who have demonstrated high standards of professional development, significant contributions to their discipline and ACSM, and commitment to the goals and long-range activities of the college.

Wilson聽was presented the Service Award which recognizes a Black student who has demonstrated a sustained commitment in one or more of these community engagement forms beyond 乱伦视频鈥檚 campus: volunteer service, political engagement, social action and activism or advocacy 鈥� the student who has shown exceptional passion and commitment towards helping others.

In nomination letters, Wilson was described as having “contagious energy and a commitment to equitable healthcare.” In her time here at 乱伦视频, Wilson is a active member of the Health Outreach Program at 乱伦视频 (H.O.P.E. Clinic), Student Board and has volunteered over 125 hours.

She is known for using her breaks and free time to oversee the scheduling and intakes of patients weekly, coordinate monthly meetings with administrative staff, and facilitate scheduling of interpretation services for patients who do not speak English as their primary language. Wilson has also aided in the expansion of the pro bono services at the CityGate Dream Center of Burlington. At the Dream Center, she is involved in the soccer program, serving as a role model to girls and women in sports and promoting wellness.

Additionally, she facilitated the donation of youth soccer jersey’s and baby diapers. Wilson is a co-writer of a grant in the North Carolina American Physical Therapy Association aiming to financially support and expand health services at the Dream Center.

Ormond聽was presented the Leadership Award which recognizes a Black student with exceptional leadership qualities demonstrated through sustained and progressive involvement and participation in university or community organizations. The student has shown the ability to lead, influence, and guide other individuals and/or organizations.

In nomination letters, Ormond was described as a “leader and advocate.” He is the chair of the 乱伦视频 School of Health Sciences Student Diversity Committee. He has facilitated and coordinated the creation of over 25 monthly Diversi-teas for faculty, staff and students to interact with guest speakers on topics of DEI in health care, LGBTQIA+ ally training for healthcare professionals, Islamophobia and its impact on health, and Black American health disparities.

He has been described as leading this committee with “curiosity and open-mindedness to diverse issues.” Ormond also volunteers his time to the H.O.P.E. Clinic not only as a Physical Therapy student, but also as a Spanish translator for clinicians and patients. He received the H.O.P.E. Clinic’s 乱伦视频 PT of the Month Excellence Award (EPiTOME) for his “exceptional leadership and creativity with his patients.” He has co-authored a peer-reviewed poster at CSM in 2023, serves as a peer mentor for two members of the Class of 2025, and volunteered to assist in the photoshoot for the third edition of the PT textbook,聽“Mobility in Context,” and was selected by the publisher to be on the cover.

In addition, the Academic Achievement award was presented to students. This award recognize a Black/African American student who has excelled in academic excellence and possesses the highest-class GPA.
