ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ faculty Hwayeon Ryu and Andrea Perreault have joined the three-year Computational Biology Peer Mentor Network, a national initiative connecting faculty from primarily undergraduate institutions to strengthen interdisciplinary teaching, research, mentorship and professional development in computational biology.

Students and faculty at the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Mathematics and Statistics Department attended and presented at MathFest, the annual meeting of the Mathematical Association of America on Aug. 5-8 in Boston, Massachusetts.

The workshop focuses on collaborative research, in small groups of underrepresented genders, including female-identifying researchers, each group working on an open problem in a particular area of mathematical biology guided by a senior group leader. 

Hwayeon Ryu, associate professor of mathematics, visited the Sydney Mathematical Research Institute at the University of Sydney, Australia, from March 23 to April 7 as part of its international visitor program to pursue research collaboration with two researchers, and delivered a colloquium talk during her visit.

Hwayeon Ryu, associate professor of mathematics, along with ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ students and an alumnus published a paper in Mathematical Biosciences and Engineering on investigating immune dysregulation in COVID-19.

An ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ associate professor of mathematics Hwayeon Ryu joined more than 290 mathematicians on Capitol Hill on Jan. 8, 2026, to advocate for sustained federal investment in mathematical sciences education and research, highlighting how federal support promotes undergraduate research, expands access to STEM pathways and strengthens the U.S. STEM workforce.

Students and faculty at the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Mathematics Department attended and presented at the Joint Mathematics Meetings on January 4-7, 2026, in Washington DC.

Hwayeon Ryu, associate professor of mathematics, published a paper in Mathematical Biosciences on investigating bistable dynamics arising from macrophage–tumor interactions in the tumor microenvironment.

Hwayeon Ryu, associate professor of mathematics, presented and co-organized a special session at the Third Joint SIAM/CAIMS Annual Meetings held July 28–August 1, 2025 in Montréal, Canada.
