Juan Obando presents at Reverse Art Space in Brooklyn /u/news/2013/02/19/juan-obando-presents-at-reverse-art-space-in-brooklyn/ Tue, 19 Feb 2013 16:52:00 +0000 /u/news/2013/02/19/juan-obando-presents-at-reverse-art-space-in-brooklyn/

The presentation is at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 20 at Reverse Art Space at 28 Frost St. in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

The Impossible Project series seeks to promote dialogue, exchange, and interaction between artists and general public.

Museum Mixtape is an album and a series of videos in which amateur rappers perform freestyle rhymes as live critiques of museums in the southeast United States. The project aims to create a playful connection between hip-hop narratives and institutional art spaces while reflecting on the current state of cultural economies, institutional community engagement and emerging subcultural forms and their intersections. This project was granted a 2012 Rhizome Commission and is currently in development.

Juan Obando recieves 2012 Rhizome Commission /u/news/2012/08/29/juan-obando-recieves-2012-rhizome-commission/ Wed, 29 Aug 2012 15:01:00 +0000 /u/news/2012/08/29/juan-obando-recieves-2012-rhizome-commission/
Muesum Mixtape Vol. 1 (Dirty South Edition)

Obando’s project, composed of a series of videos, limited edition cassette copies, a website and a downloadable album, aims to create a playful connection between hip-hop narratives and institutional art spaces. By inviting local rap artists to comment (via performance) on contemporary collections in their respective locations and presenting these collaborations as an audiovisual series, a new space is offered to reflect on the current state of cultural economies, institutional community engagement and emerging subcultural forms and their intersections.

Founded in 2001 to support artists working with technology, the Rhizome Commissions Program has awarded 72 commissions as of 2012. Projects realized through the Program represent some of the forward-thinking and innovative works of media and internet-based art.

The exhibition is calles “BACKLASH/On women’s basic rights & freedoms: An exhibition addressing the current political climate towards women.” In response to the incredible increasing tension against providing women with basic healthcare needs and the ensuing media firestorm, which demonizes women, Soho20 Gallery Chelsea is hosting a venue for outrage. Backlash is in response to this ‘war on women’s basic rights and freedoms.’

The Sorry
The Sorry is an independent initiative at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ. We aim to connect alternative spaces with contemporary artistic practices around the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ campus. As an independent initiative, we seek to showcase work that falls under the radar of established institutions and outside the standard categories of contemporary art.

The Sorry’s events are one night only. They emphasize the urgency of new mediums and embrace social life as a space for reflection, conversation, and analysis. The sorry speaks through parties, radio, web, posters, zines and other forms of print.

http://www.thesorry.org

BB was an underground publication that circulated at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ during 2003. This satirical newspaper appeared as a one-page bi-weekly xeroxed publication poking fun at the day-to-day of campus life. Articles about the quality of campus food, tips on dating, fashion and campus facilities populated the pages of BB, which were placed every two weeks at the campus news stands by their anonymous creators. The phenomena gained momentum in the mainstream campus conversation. Students and faculty waited eagerly for the next issue of Bubble Bitching and The Pendulum published a couple of articles talking about it. And then on December 2003, Bubble Bitching called it quits.

This is, then, an opportunity to experience a blast from the past and enjoy 2003’s ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ.
