Requests for borrowing items from our Print collections will be pulled each weekday.

Accessing Library Resources from Off-Campus  

Your colleagues in Belk Library have compiled a page to help you connect to materials from off-campus.

Library instruction will transition to Moodle and WebEx, with liaison librarians continuing to work closely with teaching faculty to support the research and resource needs of those classes as needed.   By prior arrangement, your liaison librarian can join your course via WebEx, join an asynchronous chat with the class, or prepare a guide to resources specific to a research assignment.

Faculty requests for purchase of new materials will be prioritized in e-format, if available.  Please contact your liaison librarian with questions or requests.  If you need assistance exploring the availability of e-materials required for your course, please reach out to your liaison librarians.

Interlibrary Loan of physical items has largely ceased across the country, but ILL of electronic materials continues depending upon availability.  If items can be borrowed, they will be delivered via email.

Patrick Rudd, Shannon Tennant, and Teresa LePors presented at the first-year experience conference.

Patrick Rudd, coordinator of library instruction and outreach services, Teresa LePors, coordinator of library research and scholarly services, and Shannon Tennant, coordinator of library collections, presented “Librarians as Critical Partners in First-Year Student Academic Success” at the 39th Annual Conference on The First-Year Experience on Feb. 23, 2020.

The presentation shared Belk Library’s experiences as a critical partner in first-year student success through its engagement with residence life, academic advising, and the university’s first-year foundation courses. This collaboration includes faculty librarians teaching and serving as academic advisors in Ƶ 101, the university’s one-hour credit FYE seminar; teaching information literacy in the first-year foundation courses COR 110 and ENG 110; serving as personal librarians to all first-year students; and serving on the Common Reading committee.

The presentation offered lessons learned about communication, opportunities, and strategies to help faculty, staff, and librarians build successful partnerships.

Joan Ruelle, dean of the Carol Grotnes Belk Library and associate professor, has been named as one of 20 top managers of academic libraries from across the United States to the . This highly prestigious program is considered the longest-running leadership development initiative for academic library leaders.

Participants engage in a three-week residential program, featuring lectures, panels, workshops and field trips, that combines management perspectives, strategic thinking, and practical and theoretical approaches to the issues confronting academic institutions and their libraries.

Julia Bleakney, director of the Writing Center, Becky Olive-Taylor, executive director of the Koenigsberger Learning Center, Kelly Reimer, director of Teaching and Learning Technologies, and Joan Ruelle, dean of the Carol Grotnes Belk Library led a session titled “All Together Now: Deep Collaboration with Library Building Partners.” They offered insights into how libraries and their building partners can foster successful collaborative working models to focus on shared goals of student success while still leaving room for differentiation among services and departmental cultures.

Using Joan Lippincott’s deep collaboration model, the panel offered lessons learned about planning, logistics and troubleshooting along with strategies to help staff build successful partnerships with new building colleagues.

Ruelle, Chrystal Carpenter, coordinator of University Archives & Special collections, Teresa LePors, coordinator of library research & scholarly services, Patrick Rudd, coordinator of library instruction and outreach Services, and Shannon Tennant, coordinator of library collections, shared how Belk Library is creatively embedded in efforts to engage and challenge Ƶ students, and how library activities, strategies, and planning reflect an institutional commitment to high impact practices.

Their session, “High Impact Practices and the Academic Library,” offered attendees the opportunity to reflect on their library’s involvement in high impact practices and to build strategies to deepen efforts at their institutions.

​Each semester, different Love School of Business faculty members teach the introductory business course. For fall 2019 the instructors are David Moura, instructor in management, Brian Nienhaus, associate professor of business communication, Rosey Bao, assistant professor of strategic management, and Neil Saunders, adjunct instructor in management. Over the next two years, the course will incorporate the textbook "Introduction to Business" for 44 sections of the course, saving 1,056 students a projected $84,000 in textbook costs.

The book discusses the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning from four perspectives: pedagogy, theory, research, and professional development; each discussion opens with a foundational chapter that offers questions, theories and literature to introduce the chapters that follow.

In this role, Akman will be the liaison librarian to the departments/programs of Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, Exercise Science, Geographic Information System, Neuroscience, and Public Health, and the School of Health Sciences’ Doctor of Physical Therapy and Physician Assistant Studies programs.

Prior to coming to Ƶ, Akman received his master's degree in library science at the University of North Carolina School of Information and Library Science at Chapel Hill, where he also served as graduate research assistant in Clinical, Academic and Research Engagement at the UNC Health Sciences Library. He has also completed internships in the Research and Education Department at the Duke University Medical Center Library & Archives, and in the Special Collections and Archives at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

The book describes all aspects of a personal librarian program, including potential campus partners, diverse student populations, marketing approaches, technology integration, various assessment methods, and common pitfalls and how to avoid them.

The authors, from Ƶ, Case Western Reserve University, and the University of Toronto, offer practical advice and case studies that examine how to develop, sustain, and assess personal librarian programs. Also included are best practices for implementing or improving outreach efforts through relationship development, communications efforts, and programming. The book is available from .

Study smart: Check out our infographics gallery on the first and second floors of Belk Library to find useful tips on how to study smart and successfully navigate finals. “Snap a pic” to take the tips with you. Find more tips on the Counseling Services website.

Study spaces: Find your preferred place to study in Belk Library and Moseley Center. The library is open 24/7 through May 21 at 11 p.m. Moseley Center is open normal hours and conference rooms are available for study when not scheduled for events; just look for signs indicating availability.

Fitness breaks: Try a Study Break yoga class at Belk Library. Classes are scheduled on Thursday, May 16, at 10 p.m., on Friday, May 17 at 7 p.m., and on Sunday, May 19, at 10 p.m., and will be held outside the Koenigsberger Learning Center (KLC) doors. Or check out a Campus Rec & Wellness Group Ex class. Additional Campus Recreation & Wellness facilities are open during spring exams and graduation week, too.

Put the books down and color: Find coloring supplies and other distractions under the skylight in Belk Library.

Bowman also shared lessons learned during the creation and mounting of the fall 2018 exhibit “Ƶ College and the First World War, 1914-1919” that coincided with the recent centennial of the end of World War I.
