The students presented original works of poetry and non-fiction, and we all attended workshops, heard authors read from their works (Jacqueline Woodson, Lorene Cary, Kay Ryan, and Dave Eggers), and attended many sessions of student papers.

Walt Wolfram, sociolinguist and professor at North Carolina State University, will present a program on North Carolina dialects on Wednesday, October 27, at 7:30 p.m. in Yeager Recital Hall.

Dr. Kathy Lyday-Lee gave a presentation on developing a General Studies Interdisciplinary seminar on the Melungeons at ��Ƶ (taught Fall 2006 and Spring 2008) at the Melungeon Historical Society meeting in Rogersville, Tennessee, on June 12. Dr. Lyday-Lee is a founding board member of the MHS.

Sigma Tau Delta lecture and reading – Oct. 28

Andrew Perry will deliver the annual Sigma Tau Delta lecture on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in Yeager Recital Hall. His lecture, “Gerunding the Noun: A Cri de Couer for the Arts as Rampart and Even Bulwark Against a Busted World,” will be followed by a brief reading.

The event is sponsored by the Xi Omicron Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society and the English Department.

Dr. Richard D. Rust to give Sigma Tau Delta Annual Address Oct. 30

On Tuesday, October 30, UNC-Chapel Hill Professor of American Literature, Dr. Richard D. Rust, will deliver the annual Sigma Tau Delta address on why Washington Irving is still relevant to readers of today.

The title of his talk is “Old Gold: Why Washington Iriving Still Matters.” The program will begin at 7:30 pm, following the annual Sigma Tau Delta Honor Society induction, and will be held in McKinnon Hall in Moseley Center at ��Ƶ.
