The group includes Director of Residence Life MarQuita Barker, Director of the Center for Leadership Melanie Bullock and Kiah Glenn, assistant director of the Center for Race, Ethnicity, & Diversity Education (CREDE).

The Ujima Institute is designed for African American and Black higher education professionals who aspire to senior student affairs officer roles and faculty positions, including the cabinet-level vice president for student affairs positions at colleges and universities. This highly selective, cohort-based institute offers an intensive, challenging and collegial learning environment for student affairs professionals as they develop culturally relevant leadership skills. Ujima is the third principle of Kwanzaa and embodies an active commitment to the collective and to shared liberation.

Aliana Harrison, associate director of residence life for residential education and community development

Harrison, a 2008 ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ alumna, assumed the role in mid-October at the organization’s annual conference. NCHO is a state-level association designed to create a professional community that promotes an exchange of ideas and philosophies among institutions with residence hall programs.

NCHO has been Harrison’s professional home since her days in graduate school when she worked with her cohort members to plan NCHO’s first Graduate Professional Summit and served on the professional development committee prior to moving to Virginia in 2014.

In her role as NCHO President, she is excited to connect with campuses across the state to continue to see how NCHO can support the needs of diverse institution types along with highlighting the amazing work that is happening across the state. Some of her goals connect to increasing NCHO’s visibility and exploring how all professional levels find meaning through their NCHO experiences.

Barker presents housing data at international conference /u/news/2019/06/25/barker-presents-housing-data-at-international-conference/ Tue, 25 Jun 2019 19:20:00 +0000 /u/news/2019/06/25/barker-presents-housing-data-at-international-conference/ Director of Residence Life MarQuita Barker presented at the Association of College and University Housing Officers – International (ACUHO-I) Annual Conference and Expo in Toronto, Canada regarding creating equitable systems in the housing selection process.

Barker led a session that discussed the unintended consequences of how institutions design housing selection procedures for students. Whether institutions have a residency requirement or are intensely competing with off-campus properties, there are strategies in place that determine the priority for selection of student housing.

When designing these processes, there can often be inequities for lower income, first-generation, international, and transfer students. This interactive session provided tips and strategies to create systems that consider issues of diversity and inclusion while prioritizing occupancy management.

The ACUHO-I Annual Conference and Expo unites campus housing and residence life leaders from around the world to advance the field, enhance the skills of professionals, and mobilize the community.

Fall Semester Closing of Residence Halls and the Loy Center /u/news/2010/12/01/fall-semester-closing-of-residence-halls-and-the-loy-center/ Wed, 01 Dec 2010 21:31:00 +0000 /u/news/2010/12/01/fall-semester-closing-of-residence-halls-and-the-loy-center/ Fall Semester Closing of Residence Halls and the Loy Center

The close of the fall semester is fast approaching and there are several important things you must complete before you prepare to leave for the semester break. It is very important that you follow these procedures. If you have any questions, please contact a member of the Residence Life Staff.

1. All residence halls and houses close at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec.15. All electrical cords, including aquariums, must be unplugged. You will not need to unplug your refrigerator but be sure to remove any perishable food items. Close and lock windows, close blinds/drapes, turn off lights, empty trash in designated area, remove all personal items from the floor, lock your bedroom door (don’t forget your keys!), and take your valuables home. Set heater thermostat to low heat or a low setting-approx. 68 degrees.

2. All students must depart the residence halls and houses 24 hours after their last exam.

3. If you are graduating, withdrawing, or leaving for Study Abroad and not returning winter and spring terms you must remove your belongings and turn in your key 24 hours after your last exam. Make sure to schedule a checkout time with your RA, HA, or House Manager a day before you depart.

4. If your roommate is not returning or you are currently without a roommate, please make sure that the bed, closet, desk and dresser space is cleared for your new roommate. Residence life staff and physical plant will be around to check the space.

5. All residence halls and houses will re-open on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011 at 2 p.m. for students enrolled in winter term classes. Remember, you must be enrolled in winter term classes in order to live in campus housing during this time.

6. Once the residence halls close all exterior entrance doors will be inaccessible. Combinations will be changed and plugs will be inserted into the lock to deny access to students prior to opening. If at any time you find it necessary to get into your room prior to the Jan. 2 opening, your request will have to be approved by the Residence Life Main Office and a $50 entrance fee will need to be paid before entry.
