The title of her talk is “Drawing On Humor for Change.”

Cartoonist and author Liza Donnelly

Donnelly is creator of digital live drawing, a new form of journalism wherein she draws using a tablet and shares impressions and visual reports of events and news instantly on social media. She writes and illustrates a regular column for Medium on politics and global women’s rights and is the author of 17 books.

When Liza Donnelly joined The New Yorker in 1982, she was the youngest cartoonist on staff and one of only three women at the time to draw cartoons for the magazine. She’s still there. In 2005, Donnelly wrote the definitive book about her colleagues: “Funny Ladies: The New Yorker’s Greatest Women Cartoonists and Their Cartoons.” She’s been part of many other books, including “Sex and Sensibility,” “Cartoon Marriage” (about her life with fellow New Yorker cartoonist Michael Maslin) and a popular series of dinosaur books for kids. Her latest is “Women on Men.”

In 2007, Donnelly joined the United Nations initiative Cartooning for Peace. She travels worldwide to speak out about freedom of speech, world peace and other global issues. Along with her New Yorker cartoons, Donnelly writes a column for Forbes, and draws a weekly political cartoon for Medium. She’s a founding member of the U.S. branch of the international organization FECO, and has taught at Vassar College and The School of Visual Arts. She received an honorary doctorate from the University of Connecticut and is a cultural envoy for the U.S. State Department, traveling to speak about women’s rights, freedom of expression and cartoons.

Through digital live drawing, Donnelly has completed work for numerous media outlets including CBS News, The New Yorker, Fusion, NBC and covered live the Oscars, Democratic National Convention, national presidential debates, the 2017 Presidential Inauguration, among others.

The Liberal Arts Forum, an ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ SGA-funded organization, hosts speaker visits on campus each semester. Most events are free to the public and a ticket is not required. Our speaker presentations qualify for cultural programming credit in many classes. Ask your professor.

To recommend a speaker, or learn more about the organization, attend a weekly class meeting on Tuesdays at 4:15 p.m. in Carlton 309.

Asian Pacific Islander Month 2019 /u/news/2019/03/29/asian-pacific-islander-month-2019/ Fri, 29 Mar 2019 16:40:00 +0000 /u/news/2019/03/29/asian-pacific-islander-month-2019/ CREDE would like to announce the celebration of Asian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month during the entire month of April.

A rather broad term, Asian/Pacific Islander encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of: Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island).

API Heritage Month is typically celebrated in May to commemorate the achievements and contributions of people of Asian and Pacific Islander descent in the United States. Like many other colleges and universities, ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ celebrates API Heritage Month in April due to activities related to the end of the academic year and commencement during May.

In 1978, Congress passed a joint Congressional Resolution to celebrate Asian-American Heritage Week during the first 10 days of May. This date was chosen because two important anniversaries fall during this time: the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in the United States on May 7, 1843, and the completion of the transcontinental railroad by many Chinese laborers on May 10, 1869. In 1990 President George H. W. Bush and Congress voted to expand the celebration, and since 1992 May has been designated as API Heritage Month.

This year, the planning committee has developed the theme for the month of “Where we have been, where we are, and where we are going.” Programs will reflect this theme either in scope or content. We will also highlight programs that, though not executed by the CREDE, fall under the umbrella of Asian/Pacific Islander identity.

Afrocubanismo – Thursday, April 18 /u/news/2019/03/20/afrocubanismo-thursday-april-18/ Wed, 20 Mar 2019 19:20:00 +0000 /u/news/2019/03/20/afrocubanismo-thursday-april-18/ Thursday, April 18
World Percussion Ensemble, “Afrocubanismo”
The ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Taphouse, 10 p.m.

Afrocubanismo symbolizes the legitimacy of black identity in Cuban society, culture and art. From Dizzy Gillespie, the Bo Diddley beat and the I Love Lucy Show to Gloria Estefan, Carlos Santana and Selena, we have long shared a musical heritage with Cuba. Even today, songs such as “Mi Gente” featuring Beyoncé and “Dinero” with JLo, DJ Khalid and Cardi B show that the influence is still strong.

The World Percussion Ensemble performs African-based Cuban percussion music to recreate the magic of these rhythmic forms that continues to inspire music today. The show honors black identity by performing Cuban folkloric, popular and religious music with a contemporary twist. The music features Son, Guaguanco, Iyesa, Egungun, Yambu, Conga de Comparsa and more. Our palette of instruments includes claves, congas, bongos, bells, shekere and timbales. We invite you to join us and experience this unique musical experience. Dancing will be encouraged!

The ensemble is directed by Professor Jim Roberts. Members: Andrew High, Erika Swinney, Professor Greg Hlavaty, Quint Slack, Justin Starr, Sam Ellingsworth and Professor Tony Crider.

Admission is free; no ticket required.

Department of Performing Arts presents '1940s Radio Hour' May 2-6 /u/news/2019/03/20/department-of-performing-arts-presents-1940s-radio-hour-may-2-6/ Wed, 20 Mar 2019 18:55:00 +0000 /u/news/2019/03/20/department-of-performing-arts-presents-1940s-radio-hour-may-2-6/

The ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Department of Performing Arts is presenting “The 1940s Radio Hour” May 2 through 6 in Roberts Studio Theatre, located in Scott Studios at Arts West.

A different time is evoked in this live radio broadcast of The Mutual Manhattan Variety Cavalcade from the Hotel Astor’s Algonquin Room on Dec. 21, 1942. Tunes such as “Black Magic,” “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “Our Love is Here to Stay,” “Blues in the Night” and a host of others are featured.

The spirit of that bygone era when the world was at war is accurately captured as the station’s harassed producer copes with members of his team: a drunk lead singer; “Pops”, the backstage bookmaking doorman; a delivery boy who wants a chance in front of the mic; and the second banana who dreams of singing a ballad.

A shortened radio version of “A Christmas Carol” is even presented accomplishing sound effects the old-fashioned way.

The book is by Walton Jones, based on an idea by Walton Jones and Carol Lees. The music is by various composers and the production is directed by Linda Sabo, associate professor of performing arts.

On May 2, 3 and 6, the performance begins at 7:30 p.m. On May 4, performances will begin at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and there will be a 2 p.m. matinee performance on May 5.

Admission: $15 or ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ ID. Reservations are highly recommended and will be offered beginning April 25 by calling (336) 278-5650 or visiting
