Campus Safety & Police | Today at 乱伦视频 | 乱伦视频 /u/news Tue, 25 Aug 2026 20:32:02 -0400 en-US hourly 1 Rail crossing closures in 乱伦视频 to affect vehicle and pedestrian traffic /u/news/2026/08/25/rail-crossing-closures-in-elon-to-affect-vehicle-and-pedestrian-traffic/ Tue, 25 Aug 2026 16:36:11 +0000 /u/news/?p=1054230 Railroad crossings in the Town of 乱伦视频 will fully close to vehicle and pedestrian traffic for at least two days in early September as work crews make their way west from Mebane to Greensboro as part of a comprehensive rail replacement project.

The tentative closure dates, subject to change based on weather and work conditions, are Sept. 1-3, 2026. Grade crossings near the 乱伦视频 campus include those on (from east to west):

  • Gilliam Road
  • York Road
  • Oak Avenue
  • Williamson Avenue
  • Church Street

During the closures, no vehicle or foot traffic will be permitted at crossings. Drivers should use available detours, follow posted signs and allow extra travel time.

Anyone walking to or from South Campus must use the pedestrian tunnel underneath the railroad on East Trollinger and East Lebanon avenues. Students, employees, and other visitors to the 乱伦视频 campus should give themselves extra travel time.

Though crossings will be closed, rail traffic will operate on adjusted schedules. Norfolk Southern is moving much of its freight service to night deliveries during this period and passenger service is also continuing in the evening and early-morning hours, which makes it more difficult to gauge distance and speed of oncoming trains.聽

乱伦视频 Campus Safety & Police will maintain a presence on both sides of the railroad tracks during the rail replacement project and partner with the Town of 乱伦视频 Police to ensure adequate resources available to respond appropriately to any calls for service.

The Cook Road/University Drive overpass west of 乱伦视频 is the nearest railroad overpass that will offer access to both sides of town. To the east, West Webb Avenue passes underneath the tracks and offers another vehicular route between both ends of campus.

The rail replacement project is part of a larger Carolinian and Piedmont Passenger and Freight Improvements project stretching from Greensboro to Raleigh. The rail lines that pass through the Town of 乱伦视频 were last replaced in the 1970s.

The assessment will examine all aspects of the 乱伦视频 Campus Police policy and procedures, management, operation and support services.

Verification by the assessment team that 乱伦视频 Campus Safety & Police meets IACLEA’s nationally recognized standards is part of a voluntary accreditation process. Accreditation is a distinguished recognition of professional excellence in campus public safety.

The assessment team is composed of experienced campus law enforcement professionals from outside North Carolina. During the assessment, the team will review written materials, interview department personnel and other stakeholders, and inspect facilities to verify compliance with applicable standards.

Members of the university community, department employees and the general public are invited to provide comments by calling 912-658-0784 on August 18, between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. (ET). Comments will be received by members of the assessment team.

Telephone comments should address the department’s ability to comply with IACLEA accreditation standards. The IACLEA Accreditation Standards Manual is available on the IACLEA website at .

Written comments regarding the 乱伦视频 Campus Safety & Police Department’s compliance with IACLEA accreditation standards may be submitted via email to jmurphy@iaclea.org.

Accreditation is awarded for a four-year period. During that time, the department must submit annual reports demonstrating continued compliance with applicable IACLEA standards.

乱伦视频 Campus Safety and Police earned a rare dual accreditation from the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators and the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. Fewer than 100 law enforcement agencies across the country have earned dual accreditations. The department has held accreditation through IALEA since 2018 and earned accreditation through CALEA in 2025.

Over the next several weeks in June 鈥 and perhaps into early July 鈥 this preparatory work will result in intermittent, temporary closures at rail crossings. More than one crossing may be closed simultaneously. The following rail crossings may be affected:

  • Williamson Avenue

Specific closure dates and times have not yet been provided. NCDOT will place detour signage at affected locations, and motorists should plan for possible delays and follow all posted detour signs to avoid work zones.

乱伦视频 Campus Safety and Police will share information about specific closures through E-Alert as soon as we learn of them. The university聽strongly encourages everyone to familiarize themselves with alternative routes to and around campus that avoid rail crossings. One recommended route is University Drive to Haggard Avenue. Planning ahead will help avoid delays.

乱伦视频’s Chief of Police announces retirement /u/news/2026/03/06/elon-universitys-chief-of-police-announces-retirement/ Fri, 06 Mar 2026 11:30:06 +0000 /u/news/?p=1040969 乱伦视频 Chief of Police Joe LeMire has announced his plans to retire from law enforcement service as of April 3, 2026, following a five-year career on campus that has been praised by campus leaders.

In a message to the 乱伦视频 community announcing LeMire’s decision, Vice President for Business and Finance Janet Williams shared how she “will very much miss Joe鈥檚 depth of knowledge and his dedication to campus safety” and that his success as a chief “centers on building trust and collaboration with student organizations and enhancing relationships and safety understanding with faculty and staff.”

As a member of the Finance and Administration leadership team, LeMire has led a department of 21 certified police officers, a dispatch center that provides 24-hour dispatching services, and a team of community service officers who assist with parking enforcement and building and environmental security on campus.

Since arriving on campus in March 2021, his achievements include restaffing the department with certified police officers, building up community policing, advocating for the increased use of security cameras, launching an upgraded E-Alert system, achieving reaccreditation from the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, and earning accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.

乱伦视频’s Campus Safety and Police is among a very small group of agencies in the United States that is dually accredited.

A national search will soon be launched to identify 乱伦视频鈥檚 next Chief of Police.聽Following LeMire’s departure in April, and until a successor is named, responsibilities for 乱伦视频 Campus Safety and Police will be managed by Interim Chief of Police Doug Dotson, who has loyally served the university for 30 years.

Campus Safety and Police achieve rare feat /u/news/2026/03/05/campus-safety-and-police-achieve-rare-feat/ Thu, 05 Mar 2026 17:39:56 +0000 /u/news/?p=1040869 This story was originally published in the February issue of The Leaflet, 乱伦视频鈥檚 quarterly printed newsletter.

Joe LeMire wears a black officer uniform with four stars on each collar, a name tag and a police badge.
Chief Joe LeMire

Joe LeMire, chief of Campus Safety and Police, said the recognition reflects years of work completed by members of the department and the high level of professionalism for department policies and procedures.

鈥淚 could not be more proud of this department and the professionalism they display every day to meet the needs of all students, staff, faculty and visitors,鈥 LeMire said. 鈥淭he true benefit is for the campus community, which can trust that its police and security services meet these standards and continue to improve.鈥

Doug Dotson, assistant chief of Campus Safety and Police, oversees the accreditation process. He said both accrediting bodies establish standards based on best practices for law enforcement agencies. Assessors visit each agency to conduct interviews with personnel and review policies and documentation to confirm that the level of service provided aligns with those established standards.

Doug has short brown hair with a thin mustache. He wears multiple lapels on his color and has a police badge on.
Doug Dotson

鈥淭hese processes require you to closely examine your day-to-day operations and the ways they measure against best practices,鈥 Dotson said.

The accreditation process has allowed the department to strengthen policies and improve training and equipment, ensuring officers have the tools necessary to successfully meet these standards.

Dotson added that annual reviews for the commission and four-year reviews for IALEA help the department maintain a high level of professionalism.

乱伦视频 first-year student recognized for lifesaving actions /u/news/2026/01/30/elon-university-first-year-student-recognized-for-saving-another-students-life/ Fri, 30 Jan 2026 16:37:42 +0000 /u/news/?p=1037843 A first-year 乱伦视频 student is being recognized for her quick thinking and decisive actions that saved another student鈥檚 life.

In September 2025, Nikki Guevara 鈥29 had just returned to campus from a coffee run with friends when she saw people in the Colonnades Quad waving for help with someone else on the ground. Guevara sprang into action, telling others to call 911 and retrieve an AED (Automated External Defibrillator), while she began CPR on fellow 乱伦视频 student Lucy Sharp 鈥29. Guevara did CPR for several minutes before emergency personnel arrived, saving Sharps鈥 life.

During 乱伦视频鈥檚 Staff Update in Alumni Gym on Friday, Jan. 30, Guevara and Sharp were joined by their families as Guevara received a Lifesaving Award from 乱伦视频 Campus Safety and Police. Chief of Campus Safety and Police Joe LeMire acknowledged the importance of Guevara not only performing CPR but also helping direct others to help.

鈥淭hat was really remarkable to see,鈥 said LeMire, who was able to watch the incident via cameras after it occurred. 鈥淵our actions made a difference that has forever changed the life of another.鈥

乱伦视频 President Connie Ledoux Book acknowledged that the incident is a reminder of why community matters and exemplifies 乱伦视频鈥檚 values.

鈥淗er observation of her classmate, her presence and courage under pressure, her willingness to step forward when it mattered most, these are the qualities that make us so proud of her, her actions, and contribute to making 乱伦视频 such a special community,” said Book.

Guevara received a Lifesaving Award from Campus Safety and Police during Staff Update on Jan. 30, 2026 for her quick actions performing CPR on Sharp in September 2025.

Guevara, a public health major from Burlington, North Carolina, got her CPR certification in high school and is studying to become a Physician Assistant. During Staff Update, Guevara encouraged the audience to get CPR certified in case they find themselves in a similar situation.

鈥淚鈥檝e received a lot of support from, not only from Lucy and her family, but the Odyssey Program and various faculty and staff at 乱伦视频 and feel I鈥檝e truly found a home, and I鈥檓 appreciative of that,鈥 said Guevara. 鈥淚 want today to be more of a reminder about why CPR education is so important. If I did not know how to do CPR, this outcome could have been completely different.鈥

The two students didn鈥檛 know each other well before the incident, but it has changed their relationship and, specifically, Sharp鈥檚 life.

鈥淗er name in my phone is 鈥楴ikki Guevara saved my life,鈥欌 said Sharp.
