Donathan, Thornton and Grady honored with 乱伦视频 Medallion /u/news/2026/08/17/donathan-thornton-and-grady-honored-with-elon-medallions/ Mon, 17 Aug 2026 19:14:45 +0000 /u/news/?p=1053399 Three individuals with strong commitments to 乱伦视频 were awarded the university鈥檚 most prestigious service award, the 乱伦视频 Medallion, during the Opening Day ceremony on Aug. 17 in Alumni Gym.

Jim Donathan, longtime associate director of academic advising and academic support; Mary Thornton, founder and president of Harvest Table Culinary Group; and Don Grady, associate professor emeritus of cinema and television arts, heard from former mentors, friends and colleagues before being bestowed the honor by 乱伦视频 President Connie Ledoux Book.

Jim Donathan

Jim Donathan arrived to 乱伦视频 in 1994 as associate director of academic advising and director of academic support, drawn specifically to work with mentor Lela Faye Rich. He carried the largest advising load in his department, taught 乱伦视频 101 (now 乱伦视频 1010), and was known for his sustained support of students on academic probation and for mentoring students well beyond the classroom.

Rich, who served 乱伦视频 for 29 years and received the 乱伦视频 Medallion in 2008, read Donathan鈥檚 citation for the award.

鈥淛im Donathan is the only one on this stage that has two medallions. I just happen to be wearing one of them,鈥 Rich said. 鈥淚n the advising center, I was the loudmouth. I was a loud-mouthed advocate for students. Jim was the listener. The heart, the soul of academic advising. Without his total commitment to students’ success, to our academic advising staff, to mastering all those intricacies of creating an online degree audit. I would never have received this medallion.鈥

Donathan advised 乱伦视频’s chapter of Kappa Alpha Order for 25 years and received the university’s Ward Family Excellence in Mentoring Award in 2012. His mentorship of one 乱伦视频 family led to the establishment of the聽Donathan-McAllister Endowed Scholarship in his honor. He retired in 2020, having shaped the academic support and mentoring experience for generations of 乱伦视频 students.

鈥淚 recently came across this quote from one of my favorite novelists, Pat Conroy: 鈥業 had read like a man on fire my whole life, because the genius of English teachers touched me with the dazzling beauty of language,’鈥 said Donathan when accepting the honor. 鈥溌衣资悠 does that for students. It touches them with the dazzling beauty of language. That might be the language of literature or biology, or political science, or art history, or so many other disciplines. Students can carry that language into their lives and into their future.鈥

Mary Thornton

Mary Thornton is the founder and president of Harvest Table Culinary Group, the dining partner that has served 乱伦视频 since the company’s founding. She spent years in leadership roles at Aramark, including vice president of compliance beginning in 2007, before proposing in 2016 the creation of a culinary group built around healthy, sustainable food and transparency about where food comes from.

Harvest Table launched in 2018 as an independent division of Aramark, with 乱伦视频 among its earliest partner institutions alongside Wake Forest and the University of Rochester. Under her leadership, Harvest Table has emphasized locally sourced ingredients, chef-driven menus tailored to each campus, and deeper engagement with student communities.

鈥淗ighly respected for her work ethic, expertise, relentless commitment to excellence, Mary has demonstrated a deep understanding of 乱伦视频’s mission and the critical role dining plays in building community and contributing to a welcoming campus environment,鈥 said Janet Williams, vice president for finance and administration and chief financial officer.

Most recently, Harvest Table Culinary Group made a gift supporting 乱伦视频’s Slattery Center, reflecting the company’s ongoing commitment to student health and wellness. Her partnership has helped shape the dining experience for generations of 乱伦视频 students.

鈥淚 accept this medallion with humility and deep appreciation and as a reminder to continue serving others, leading with purpose and striving to make a positive difference,鈥 said Thornton, upon accepting the award. 鈥淭hank you very much for this incredible honor. It means more to me than words can express.鈥

Don Grady

Don聽Grady聽served 乱伦视频 for 35 years. He arrived in 1985, before 乱伦视频 had a formal communications department, and taught broadcast courses and senior capstone classes throughout his career. He chaired the communications department from 1987鈥1993 and again from 2004鈥2009, became associate dean in 2010, and helped guide creation of the nation’s first undergraduate major in media analytics. He was twice elected to the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications and received the Broadcast Education Association’s Distinguished Education Service Award in 2022.

Gerald Gibson, the university鈥檚 first full-time communications professor and Grady鈥檚 undergraduate roommate at NC State University, read Grady鈥檚 citation.

鈥淒r. Grady distinguished himself as an outstanding teacher, mentor, and advisor, by teaching broadcasting, senior research capstone, … and study abroad courses, supervising as many as 50 internships a year,鈥 said Gibson. 鈥淢entoring students through research, internships, and professional employment, leading study abroad programs in Great Britain and Europe, and becoming much loved by students who sought him out for guidance, encouragement, and wise counsel, even long after graduation.”

From left to right: Gerald Gibson, Don Grady and 乱伦视频 President Connie Ledoux Book during the Opening Day ceremony on Aug. 17, 2026.

Grady鈥檚 administrative leadership and personal investment in students and faculty helped build 乱伦视频’s School of Communications into a nationally recognized program. He retired in 2020, leaving a legacy colleagues describe as foundational to the school’s success.

鈥淪o many of our graduates (are) doing great work in media markets all over the country. 鈥㏕hey鈥檙e the reason we do this work,鈥 Grady said. 鈥淭oward the end of my time, it was my privilege to regularly teach the senior theory and research capstone course that gave students the opportunity to dig into why communication professionals do what they do, and how what they do ripples through the lives of individuals and society.”

Asian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month: A mother-and-son duo make Lakeside Dining a home away from home for guests /u/news/2026/04/27/asian-pacific-islander-heritage-month-a-mother-and-son-duo-make-lakeside-dining-a-home-away-from-home-for-guests/ Mon, 27 Apr 2026 13:00:20 +0000 /u/news/?p=1045346 Keerati 鈥淒anny鈥 Sartyoungkul describes himself as a 鈥渟ocial chameleon,鈥 someone who can find common ground with just about anyone he meets.

鈥淚f you’re Asian American or from the motherland [Thailand] or from down south or up north, I feel something in common with you,鈥 he said.

Sartyoungkul鈥檚 experiences shape how he cooks and how he leads. As executive chef for 乱伦视频 Dining, he focuses on creating meals that people recognize, enjoy and feel comfortable choosing.

鈥淚 love seeing people enjoy my food,鈥 he said.

Noppanit 鈥淢eena鈥 Monaghan shares the same excitement for creating an enjoyable meal. As chef de partie, she prepares meals at the international station in Lakeside Dining Hall. She is also Sartyoungkul鈥檚 mother and, together, they focus on getting the details right, from how a dish is prepared to how it lands with the people eating it.

鈥淚 work with students every day who are trying to make 乱伦视频 a home away from home,鈥 Monaghan said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 important I try everything that goes out to make sure it is 100 percent right.鈥

That attention to detail often means learning dishes that are new to them. Sartyoungkul said they spend time researching recipes, studying techniques and planning menus to authentically reflect the food where students come from.

For Monaghan, that care shows up in small, specific moments.

鈥淚 made arepas for a student from Colombia and she loved it,鈥 she said.

For Sartyoungkul, those moments explain why the work matters. A single meal can help one student feel familiar while introducing others to something new.

鈥淢any international students miss the food from home,鈥 he said. 鈥淧roviding familiar tastes helps students feel seen, valued and more at ease in their campus environment.鈥

Sartyoungkul prepares sushi popups at a Japanese popup station outside of Lakeside Dining Hall.

That belief carries into how he works with student groups across campus. During Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Sartyoungkul partnered with the Asian Pacific Student Association to plan dining hall takeovers featuring Malaysian, Chinese and Japanese cuisines. Students identified the cuisines and worked with him to shape the menus.

For him, the process is as important as the food itself. It ensures the meals reflect what students want to see and what they want to share with others.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 want anyone to feel left out,鈥 he said. 鈥淲hether you鈥檙e vegan, from another country, have dietary preferences or religious needs or an allergy, we want to make sure there are options for everybody.鈥

That sense of care is rooted in family. Sartyoungkul describes himself as a third-generation chef who learned alongside his mother in the kitchen.

鈥淢om beats me at Asian foods, especially with her great stir fries and Thai noodle dishes,鈥 he said. 鈥淗owever, I am trained on European cuisine and steaks, so I have her beat there.鈥

Still, there are moments when their strengths meet in the middle. Those moments often bring people together.

At 乱伦视频鈥檚 annual holiday party for employees, Monaghan manages a shrimp and grits station that regularly draws long lines of guests waiting for a plate. The dish reflects both comfort and confidence, with attention paid to technique as well as familiarity.

For Monaghan, the setting may change. The standards do not.

At work, their relationship is grounded in respect. They understand their roles and trust each other鈥檚 strengths.

鈥淢y mother and I are very close,鈥 Sartyoungkul said. 鈥淲hile she is my mother, I am also her campus executive chef, and we both clearly understand and respect those roles.鈥

For Monaghan, the work always comes back to the people she serves each day.

鈥淚 work to make students smile,鈥 she said.

Together, Sartyoungkul and Monaghan prepare food that reflects a wide range of cultures. Their work is guided by care, connection and a desire to help others feel at home, one plate at a time.

乱伦视频 honors Asian & Pacific Island Heritage Month

Harvest Table Culinary Group makes generous gift to 乱伦视频鈥檚 HealthEU Center /u/news/2026/02/05/harvest-table-culinary-group-makes-generous-gift-to-elons-healtheu-center/ Thu, 05 Feb 2026 19:08:11 +0000 /u/news/?p=1038102 乱伦视频鈥檚 commitment to the health and well-being of students, faculty and staff inspired Harvest Table Culinary Group to make a generous gift to the new HealthEU Center, which will integrate academics, wellness, campus recreation and fitness programs to ensure students gain the skills they need to thrive on campus and beyond.

鈥淥ur dining philosophy is rooted in the belief that food should nourish, energize and support long-term health, while celebrating flavor, culture and sustainability,鈥 said Mary Thorton, founder and president of Harvest Table Culinary Group. 鈥淏y supporting the HealthEU Center, we can continue advancing these values and create meaningful experiences that promote well-being.鈥

In recognition of the company鈥檚 gift, the demonstration kitchen and adjoining classroom on the third floor of the HealthEU Center will be named the Harvest Table Culinary Group Classroom and Kitchen. Teaching Kitchens encourage faculty, staff and student organizations to partner with 乱伦视频 Dining鈥檚 chefs and dietitian to create enriching learning experiences while learning valuable skills concerning healthy eating and meal preparation.

鈥淭he Teaching Kitchen program we co-developed with 乱伦视频 is a hallmark of the 乱伦视频 Dining experience and a source of great pride for us,鈥 Thorton said. 鈥淗aving a dedicated space within the HealthEU Center to host teaching kitchens will be transformative for this program.鈥

Harvest Table Culinary Group provides for the entire campus community. The company focuses on chef-driven, authentic and locally sourced food that emphasizes clean ingredients, community connection and well-being through partnerships with local farms and chefs.

鈥溌衣资悠 is a founding partner of Harvest Table Culinary Group, and we are thrilled to have a long-term, collaborative relationship,鈥 Thorton said. 鈥淥ur shared values鈥攕tudent-centered learning, global engagement and experiential education鈥攎ake this partnership truly special. We are deeply committed to the success of the Boldly 乱伦视频 (strategic plan) and proud to support the university in every way possible.鈥

Construction continues on the HealthEU Center, which is expected to open in fall 2026.

The HealthEU Center is a central component of Boldly 乱伦视频 and the university鈥檚 broader HealthEU initiative that focuses on six dimensions of health and wellness: community, emotional, purpose, financial, physical and social. The three-story center will feature new classrooms, student-faculty research spaces, multiple floors for wellness and fitness activities, and the Mark and Kim Tyson Counseling Center, which will provide individual and group therapy, as well as workshops and outreach programs.

Currently under construction, the center is located within 乱伦视频鈥檚 Innovation Quad, home to the university鈥檚 engineering and other STEM programs, and scheduled to open in Fall 2026. 乱伦视频 has set a $25 million fundraising goal to make the HealthEU Center a reality. To date, donors have contributed $23 million to the project.

鈥淭he 乱伦视频 community is grateful to Harvest Table Culinary Group for their generous support of the HealthEU Center,鈥 said Janet Williams, vice president for finance and administration and chief financial officer. 鈥淏y providing healthy and nutritious meals to our campus, Harvest Table plays an essential role in our commitment to the health and well-being of students, faculty and staff.鈥

Make An Impact

Many naming opportunities remain in the HealthEU Center, beginning at $50,000. Gift commitments may be made in full or with a pledge over five years. To find out how you can make an impact with your gift, contact Brian Baker, associate vice president for university advancement, at 336.278.7453 or bbaker7@elon.edu.
