Danieley Neighborhood takes the train to Durham /u/news/2019/10/09/danieley-neighborhood-takes-the-train-to-durham/ Wed, 09 Oct 2019 18:45:16 +0000 /u/news/?p=756642 In the second neighborhood 鈥淚mmersion Excursion鈥 of the year, a group of Danieley Center students and Faculty Director Matthew Buckmaster took the train from Burlington to Durham on Oct. 5.

Meeting Danieley faculty affiliate Ryan Johnson at the Durham station, the group toured the downtown area, spoke with local leader Nicole Thompson (President and CEO of ), visited art galleries and a bookstore, and sampled local cuisine.

Danieley Neighborhood students in the Burlington train station.

鈥淎s car-centered Americans, riding a train isn鈥檛 necessarily the first thing that pops into our minds, so Ryan and I wanted to show students they could easily access most major cities in North Carolina in a safe, affordable, and more environmentally conscious way,鈥 Buckmaster said.聽 鈥淒urham in particular is a fascinating city to explore, with a complex history and community-centered urban development plan, so it was really a sort of mini-Study USA experience for us.鈥

Students learned about the history of Durham, including Black Wall Street, a thriving business and residential area where the first African-American-owned bank in the United States was founded.

Assistant Professor Ryan Johnson explains the history of the Durham train station.

Thompson spoke on the history and politics of the urban development in the downtown area, including the influence of nearby Duke University and how community leaders are continuing to grow in a community-centered way.

Students also learned about the impact of public transportation in North Carolina, including 乱伦视频 College鈥檚 own train station (demolished in 1961), which was one of the main contributors to 乱伦视频鈥檚 early history and development. They pondered the meaning of the historical plaque outside Belk Library and the real impact of automobile emissions on the environment.聽 After the day-long excursion, students traveled back to 乱伦视频 the way many alumni during 乱伦视频’s first seven decades did 鈥 by taking a ride on the train.

What “serious impact” do automobile emissions truly have?

The Danieley Center鈥檚 monthly Immersion Excursions are a new initiative aimed at deepening living and learning in this residential neighborhood.聽 The excursions are designed by faculty to align with the neighborhood鈥檚 learning outcomes and 乱伦视频鈥檚 commitment to diversity and inclusion.聽 Students self-select and apply for each excursion, and all expenses are covered by the Danieley Neighborhood.

A previous excursion took students to the Greensboro Folk Festival, and future planned excursions include a trip to a Raleigh comedy club and to the International Civil Rights Museum in Greensboro.

Winner of 乱伦视频’s 2018 Outstanding New Student Organization, 乱伦视频 Quiz Bowl sent a six-player team to compete in the Spring 2019 Mid-Atlantic Sectionals of the National Academic Quiz Tournament, which occurred at Virginia Polytechnic and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Across 20 teams in the tournament, 乱伦视频 won six matches, placing 9th overall with a record of six wins and five losses.  乱伦视频 defeated teams from University of Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky University, West Virginia University, Eastern Tennessee State University and Liberty University (twice).

Every member of 乱伦视频’s Quiz Bowl travel team scored within the Top 100 players for the 2019 Mid-Atlantic Sectional tournament:

Academic Quiz Bowl catapults 乱伦视频’s intellectual climate with four wins at regionals /u/news/2017/03/13/academic-quiz-bowl-catapults-elons-intellectual-climate-with-four-wins-at-regionals/ Mon, 13 Mar 2017 13:00:00 +0000 /u/news/2017/03/13/academic-quiz-bowl-catapults-elons-intellectual-climate-with-four-wins-at-regionals/ Students have rallied together to bolster intellectual climate on campus in the form of a new academic student organization called Quiz Bowl.

<span style=”font-size: 13.9997px;”>From left, Matthew Antonio Bosch, director of the Gender and LGBTQIA Center, with 乱伦视频&rsquo;s tournament team &nbsp;&mdash; Clay Thompson&nbsp;&rsquo;19, Jacob Hayward &rsquo;20 and Nathan Scheer &rsquo;19.</span>
Similar to Team Jeopardy, students compete in trivia matches across world histories and cultures, current events, the sciences, fine arts, and general trivia.  乱伦视频 recently competed in their first Academic Quiz Bowl Sectional Tournament, sponsored by National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT).

乱伦视频’s Academic Quiz Bowl Team scored four wins at regionals by defeating Liberty University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Roanoke College and Wofford College. Though the university’s team did not earn a place in the NAQT National Tournament, 乱伦视频 certainly made a lasting impact on the academic landscape of the region through our presence in this tournament.

乱伦视频’s tournament team consisted of Clay Thompson ’19, Jacob Hayward ’20 and Nathan Scheer ’19.  They made a huge impact on this academic competition as seen in the ranking of the tournament’s Top 100 players, where they finished Nos. 75, 40 and 7, respectively.

<span style=”font-size: 13.9997px;”>Members of 乱伦视频's executive team, Jacob Hayward &rsquo;20 and Ali Heilman &rsquo;20</span>
Quiz Bowl began in Fall 2016 as an intellectual climate collaboration across assistant provost for communications and operations, Paul Miller, and director of the Gender and LGBTQIA Center, Matthew Antonio Bosch, who was a member of Cornell University’s Quiz Bowl team.  Taylor Hernowitz ’19 originally recruited students as Quiz Bowl’s first student president and helped the organization and executive team grow before studying abroad in the spring.

Members of the executive team, Jacob Hayward ’20 and Ali Heilman ’20, recently welcomed and recruited a crop of new students. “I love Quiz Bowl because it is a great way to de-stress and have fun while still feeling like you’re learning a lot!” Hayward says.

Always searching for more students interested in trivia and fun academic competition, Academic Quiz Bowl practices are open to any student and take place Fridays at 4 p.m. in Belk Library 102.  Anyone interested in Academic Quiz Bowl can contact the current president Clay Thompson ’19 (ithompson5@elon.edu) or advisor Matthew Antonio Bosch (mbosch3@elon.edu) to get involved.

Finding community through Quiz Bowl, Thompson says, “I’ve always been interested in trivia but lacked a format to pursue it on a regular basis with real people, in person. So to me, Quiz Bowl is not just a club that caters to intellectuals, but a community that welcomes students with open arms. It’s what all clubs should be.”

Event Management class hosts sign language dinner benefitting local charity – April 27 /u/news/2015/04/17/event-management-class-hosts-sign-language-dinner-benefitting-local-charity-april-27/ Fri, 17 Apr 2015 20:00:00 +0000 /u/news/2015/04/17/event-management-class-hosts-sign-language-dinner-benefitting-local-charity-april-27/ Students of the spring semester “Event Management” course are putting their skills to the test by hosting a fundraising dinner benefiting Communication Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Inc. located in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The “Sign & Dine” event will be held April 27 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in the McBride Gathering Space in the Numen Lumen Pavilion. Dinner will be tacos with various toppings served by local, certified American Sign Language interpreters.

Tickets are $5.00 for students, $8.00 for community members and can be purchased at the event or online at

The “Event Management” class is a unique take on engaged learning at 乱伦视频. Students enrolled in the course “study the principles of organization, planning and group dynamics as they apply to special event management in sport and recreation.”

Students also plan and administer an actual event to benefit a local philanthropy as chosen by the class.

The students formulated the idea for their event after learning about , a sign language restaurant in Toronto. Guests are given menus with illustrations of hand signs that correlate with various food options, and guests then “sign” the item to the all-deaf wait staff who bring their dish. 乱伦视频 students hope to mirror this concept at their event, “Sign & Dine.”

After researching the difficulties that the deaf community face in terms of obtaining adequate funding for interpreters or translation technology, the students decided that the funds raised through the Sign & Dine dinner should benefit a local charity that strives to provide the deaf community with these necessary materials –

CSDHH’s mission is “to ensure equal access for the deaf and hard of hearing by providing services to enhance communication through community outreach and advocacy.”

The students were drawn to the organization because of CSDHH’s commitment to not only providing services for deaf individuals, but also to advocate for and to raise awareness of the cause in the central North Carolina area. By bringing Sign & Dine to 乱伦视频, students hope to raise both funds for and awareness of the deaf community.
