Seattle alumni experience axe throwing /u/news/2019/06/05/seattle-alumni-experience-axe-throwing/ Wed, 05 Jun 2019 15:15:00 +0000 /u/news/2019/06/05/seattle-alumni-experience-axe-throwing/ On May 18, the Seattle alumni gathered at Blade and Timber for an outing of axe throwing hosted by the Seattle alumni chapter.

"ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Alumni in Seattle met at one of Seattle's newest venues, Blade & Timber, to try their hand at axe throwing," said Chapter President Colin Campbell '13. "Despite many novice throwers, bullseyes were aplenty. After a few minutes of safety tips and coaching, we were free to create our own games. Though the competition was fierce, it turns out everyone is a winner when you throw an axe 15 feet through the air."

The chapter looks forward to a community service beach cleanup on June 8th and other fun events this summer.

Seattle alumni experience professional development /u/news/2019/02/21/seattle-alumni-experience-professional-development/ Thu, 21 Feb 2019 17:05:00 +0000 /u/news/2019/02/21/seattle-alumni-experience-professional-development/ On Feb. 6, the Seattle Alumni Chapter had its annual professional development event. It was even scheduled conveniently between two snow storms that brought the area to a halt.

A panel of Seattle-based professionals included Lauren Gums of health tech startup 98point6, Naomi Komuro of Panorama Global, and ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ alum Annie McGhee '08 of Expedia Group.

Seattle ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Alumni met at a brewery south of downtown and the conversational panel went right up until closing time. The aspects of professional development most discussed were networking strategies, finding a mentor, pivoting from one field to another, the experience hurdle, and everyone's dear friend, LinkedIn.

With panelists ranging from three to 20 years in their field, alumni took away invaluable information on how to navigate the professional landscape. We are thankful for our panelists' willingness to share all that they brought to the table.

Seattle alumni helped provide 1,800 meals through Food Lifeline /u/news/2018/06/19/seattle-alumni-helped-provide-1800-meals-through-food-lifeline/ Tue, 19 Jun 2018 13:15:00 +0000 /u/news/2018/06/19/seattle-alumni-helped-provide-1800-meals-through-food-lifeline/ The Seattle alumni served their local community June 16 by packaging meals at Food Lifeline. A team of four ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ graduates helped prepare 1,800 meals that will be sent to community members in need. While this is one of many service opportunities held by the chapter each year, the group continues to be a leader of service among ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ’s 38 regional chapters.

At the event, the volunteers were in charge of repackaging frozen carrots that were leftover from a food processing plant that would’ve otherwise been sent to a landfill. The carrots came in a 6×6 feet box. Volunteers shoveled the carrots into containers, and then those containers were placed on tables where volunteers scooped the carrots into bags. The bags were collected for homeless shelters, food banks and soup kitchens across Washington. Those carrots will be added with other food to help solve hunger in the western part of the state.

Food Lifeline is located in Seattle, Washington, and they are known for rescuing food, solving hunger and feeding hungry people. According to the organization’s website, it provides 97,000 meals per day in the western Washington region. Food Lifeline relies on volunteers for support in accomplishing its mission.

Seattle alumni gather to learn the sport of curling /u/news/2018/04/04/seattle-alumni-gather-to-learn-the-sport-of-curling/ Wed, 04 Apr 2018 12:30:00 +0000 /u/news/2018/04/04/seattle-alumni-gather-to-learn-the-sport-of-curling/ On the heels of the historic USA Men’s Curling team’s gold medal in the Olympics, the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Seattle Chapter took to the ice in early March and tried their luck at the sport of curling.

Organized by chapter board member Carlyn Chase ‘08 and chapter president Marty Kelly ’08, 33 alumni and guests gathered at the Granite Curling Club in Seattle. The group had two sheets (lanes) and was lead by five professional instructors. Throughout the event, teams of five battled the cold temperatures and slick ice to learn the ins and outs of the sport of curling.

Above the ice, great perspective was had in the warm confines of the viewing lounge. It didn’t look so hard from up top at the lounge, but the ice was the ultimate equalizer. The alumni shared stories of curling glory over tacos and drinks, and enjoyed watching their fellow alum down below on the rink.

ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ may be a few years away from sending an alumni team to the Winter Olympics, but the sport gained much-deserved respect from all in attendance.

Seattle Alumni Chapter hosts professional development event /u/news/2017/12/20/seattle-alumni-chapter-hosts-professional-development-event/ Wed, 20 Dec 2017 15:35:00 +0000 /u/news/2017/12/20/seattle-alumni-chapter-hosts-professional-development-event/ What are your strengths and weaknesses? This common interview question is what the Seattle Alumni Chapter sought to answer in its first alumni professional development event on Tuesday, Dec. 12.

The Seattle Chapter board members, in partnership with ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Director of Career Development Ross Wade, provided and facilitated the StrengthsQuest personal and professional assessment for 18 Seattle-based alumni.

StrengthsQuest begins with a 30-mintue online assessment, developed to assess your natural patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving. It provides instantaneous results of five “talent themes,” which identify strengths and encourage ways to develop both personally and professionally.

All attendees brought their assessment results to the event at Miir Flagship, where they enjoyed networking and mingling prior to an actively engaged discussion on StrengthsQuest. The discussion session was facilitated by Seattle Chapter Board Secretary Laura Randall '11.

The attendees shared stories from careers that related to their assessments and the event's discussion. The alumni in attendance came from industries ranging from nursing to accounting and many others in between.

The chapter's goal of the event was for all attendees to have a takeaway. Some may have left with answers to the strengths and weaknesses question. Others better realized the differences or strengths in others.

The Office of Alumni Engagement extends its apprecation to the Seattle Alumni Chapter board members, including Marty Kelly's leadership, and Wade for effectively collaborating, coordinating a successful event and providing an extraordinary opportunity to the alumni.

Seattle alumni chapter enjoys a summer kickoff event /u/news/2017/06/27/seattle-alumni-chapter-enjoys-a-summer-kickoff-event/ Tue, 27 Jun 2017 19:40:00 +0000 /u/news/2017/06/27/seattle-alumni-chapter-enjoys-a-summer-kickoff-event/ As the summer season kicks off, ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ alumni from the classes of 2008 to 2017 came together at the Hard Rock Cafe’s popular rooftop area to reconnect and meet alumni from the Seattle area.

With gorgeous weather finally arriving, summer plans were the topic of discussion for the day. While the alumni in Seattle are very active in serving their community, they also enjoy times to socialize and mingle as a group at popular locations in the city. All in all, this was a great opportunity to reconnect the chapter before many alumni take on their other summer plans and vacations.

The Seattle Alumni Chapter will meet again on August 12th for a trail restoration at Golden Gardens Park. If you’re available to particapate in the opportunity this summer or interested in learning more about our upcoming annual Welcome to the City event in September, please follow the chapter on Facebook: .

Jessica Torrez-Riley G’12 shares professional insights with iMedia students /u/news/2017/04/27/jessica-torrez-riley-g12-shares-professional-insights-with-imedia-students/ Thu, 27 Apr 2017 18:10:00 +0000 /u/news/2017/04/27/jessica-torrez-riley-g12-shares-professional-insights-with-imedia-students/ Four days before she begins her new job on Amazon Video’s international engagement team, Jessica Torrez-Riley G’12 imparted words of wisdom on this year’s Interactive Media class.

Torrez-Riley, who delayed her beach vacation a day to return to her alma mater, discussed a variety of topics during her April 27 visit, ranging from salary negotiations to the rise of social media – as well as the quick decline of some platforms (cough, Vine, cough.)

During her informal class discussion, she often circled back to the value of her experience in the Interactive Media master’s program. While she noted that technology changes frequently, and today’s skills can become obsolete over night, the real benefit of her ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ graduate degree was learning how to learn.

“You have the ability to pick things up as things change – and that’s the most important skill you’ll leave with,” she said.

During her own iMedia experience, Torrez-Riley discovered a deep interest in social media and user experience, and a surprising love for coding. After graduation, she moved to Los Angeles where she created award-winning social media content for seasons 3 and 4 of NBC’s “The Voice.” It was the first television program to display tweets on air, she noted.

Following a return home to Seattle, Torrez-Riley then worked as an interactive producer, social media manager, and marketing program manager with clients such as Microsoft, The Gates Foundation, Major League Soccer, and Northeastern University-Seattle. And now, she prepares for her next role with Amazon Video.

With Commencement right around the corner, the iMedia students peppered Torrez-Riley with questions relating to job placement, salary adjustments and workplace challenges. Having been in their position just five years earlier, Torrez-Riley also explained how distinctive an iMedia degree is in today’s job market.

“Remember that this program makes you stand out,” she said, noting that because the students see one another each day they might forget how unique their skillsets actually are. “Remember how special you are. And how diverse you are in this media field.”
