Trustee Emeritus Royall Spence, Jr. ’42, a generous supporter of ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ and a beloved member of the Board of Trustees for more than two decades, died December 22.

Belk Library added a rare volume to its archives this fall when an ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ alumna donated to the university a copy of the first land survey ever completed in England, today considered one of the most important documents of the medieval era.

Two new Study Abroad programs launch this January as hundreds of ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ students take part in Winter Term overseas experiences. The Isabella Cannon International Centre is hosting a blog for parents and friends to stay connected with students traveling to nations such as Ghana, Peru and Australia.

ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ has been included in the National Wildlife Federation’s Campus Ecology 2010 campus sustainability case studies, the only database of its kind in the United States to highlight campus climate and sustainability efforts ranging from recycling and energy efficiency to alternative transportation systems and green jobs training programs.

Associate professors Bud and Beth Warner have been awarded the Governor’s Award for Volunteer Service by North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue for their work with the local Mayco Bigelow Community Center and North Park, recreational facilities managed by the City of Burlington Recreation and Parks Department.

The Southern Conference announced this week its Academic All-Conference Team for the 2010 fall season, with ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ at the top of the list of conference schools for the number of student-athletes who excelled in the classroom.

Thirty-nine candidates in ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program received their degrees on Dec. 12, 2010, in an afternoon ceremony that featured an address from the creator of Evidence in Motion, a highly regarded education and business practice consultation company within the physical therapy profession.

The ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Board of Trustees voted Oct. 22 to designate a 56-acre undeveloped tract north of University Drive as the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Forest, a dedicated land preserve and natural area. The action protects the largest remaining intact forest in the Town of ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ and safeguards thousands of species of plants, animals and other organisms.

ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ’s fourth annual POWERless Energy Competition concluded this month with students in Danieley Center C receiving top honors for reducing their building’s power usage by almost a third of what it consumed during a baseline measurement period.

The New York-based Park Foundation has awarded the Periclean Scholars program at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ a grant to send additional students abroad in January with the goal of producing a short documentary highlighting Sri Lanka’s outlook and actions on water issues, along with its ecological and socio-economic diversity. The film will be part of an environmental summit organized by the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ students.
