RecycleMania 2011 came to a close at College Coffee on April 19 when students and area residence halls were honored for their efforts to reduce the amount of trash that goes into area landfills. The Ƶ contest was part of a national competition to see which schools could do the best job at recycling.
RecycleMania final standings for Ƶ:
Grand Champion Results – 59,247 lbs collected (compared head-to-head by totals collected)
• Placed 253rd out of 510 registered participating schools
• 10th out of 17 in North Carolina
• 3rd out of 7 in the Southern Conference
Per Capita Classic Division – 8.83 lbs./person
• Placed 252nd out of 508 registered participating schools
• 8th out of 17 in North Carolina
• 3rd out of 7 in the Southern Conference
On campus, students of The Colonnades residence halls took top honors for 7.76 pounds per person collected of recycled material, with with a total of 1,195 pounds tallied from that area.
The grand prize winner in the Sustainability Video contest was Taylor Shain, who won $250 for his video highlighting the Ƶ Community Garden.
Runner-up was Matt Eastman, along with Mark Rehbein. Their video illustrated several of Ƶ’s sustainability initiatives.
