Gortney ’77 spoke of courage, integrity and balance on Saturday morning in Commencement exercises attended by thousands of relatives and friends who gathered Under the Oaks to celebrate the Class of 2011’s academic journey.

The ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ Phoenix secured a share of its fourth Southern Conference regular-season title, and third in four years, by rallying for four runs in the bottom of the eight for an 8-7 win over the visiting Furman Paladins on May 19. The win was the 11th for ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ in its final at bat this season.

ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ’s Bateman Team places in top three in nation

ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ finished third in the nation in the 2011 Bateman Case Study Competition, a national contest established by the Public Relations Society of America to give university students an opportunity to exercise the analytical skills and judgment required for public relations problem solving.

Six ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ athletics teams earn top academic honors

Six ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ athletics teams rank among the nation’s top 10 percent in their sports in the annual NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) report. The ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ Phoenix men’s basketball, women’s cross country, women’s golf, women’s indoor and outdoor track and volleyball teams are among the NCAA Division I teams receiving public recognition awards for their APR scores, the NCAA announced May 17.

ELONTHON fundraiser tops $100,000 for children

For the second consecutive year, ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ students who took part in the annual springtime ELONTHON dance marathon raised more than $100,000 to benefit young patients and their families with the nonprofit Children’s Miracle Network and Duke Children’s Hospital.

Lumen Scholar seeks new treatment to heart disease

Heart attacks and other cardiovascular conditions kill thousands of Americans every day, and as a high school student, that statistic turned personal for ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ senior Amanda Clark. The biochemistry major focused her undergraduate research while at the university on identifying some ways that heart disease develops, which could in turn lead to better treatments, and her work is the latest to be featured in a series of E-net profiles on Lumen Scholars in the Class of 2011.
