CELEBRATE! Week 2011 runs April 26-May 2

Hundreds of ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ students will be involved in activities during CELEBRATE! 2011, a weeklong celebration of student achievements in academics and the arts that begins April 26 and runs through May 2. Programs include seminars, art exhibitions, plays, a film festival, dance and music performances.

Michelle Trim publishes book chapter

Michelle Trim published a chapter in the new anthology The 21st Century Motherhood Movement:
Mothers Speak Out on Why We Need to Change the World and How to Do It
. Her chapter is titled, "Articulating a Rhetoric of Agency for Pregnancy Through Intersectionality: The National Advocates for Pregnant Women."

Spring Undergraduate Research Forum showcases ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ scholarship

Work by ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ students and professors took center stage Wednesday in the opening hours of SURF 2011 with a new morning format for the annual event that recognizes faculty and undergraduate research. Twenty-two professors took part in third annual "Celebration of Faculty Scholarship" in McKinnon Hall, where they shared work in a poster presentation side-by-side with students who had been accepted to display findings of their own endeavors.

ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ’s Phi Beta Kappa chapter welcomes 51 new members

Fifty-one ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ students were inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest and often considered the nation’s most prestigious honor society, during a dinner and ceremony on April 19. Douglas J. McAdam, a renowned civil rights scholar and Stanford University sociology professor, was the keynote speaker.

Phi Beta Kappa sponsors visit by national expert on social movements

Doug McAdam, a professor at Stanford University and pioneer in analyzing social movements, will visit ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ April 18-19 and give a public lecture. McAdam will speak on “The Long-term Civic Impact of Youth Activism: The Curious Contrast between Freedom Summer and Teach for America" at 7:30 p.m., April 18, in Whitley Auditorium.

New majors to be offered starting in Fall 2011

Four new majors will be offered to ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ students starting in the fall. Early childhood education is an addition to the School of Education’s programs; information science replaces the current computer information systems major in the Department of Computing Sciences; and public health studies, and arts administration, are both interdisciplinary majors within ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ College, the College of Arts and Sciences.
