Alison Morrison-Shetlar, vice provost and dean of undergraduate studies at the University of Central Florida, Orlando, Fla., has been named dean of ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ College, the College of Arts and Sciences, and professor of biology at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ. Her appointment by Provost Steven House comes after a national search.
National teaching expert to give lecture at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ – March 10

Marilyn Cochran-Smith, a national expert on teacher education research, comes to ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ on March 10 for an evening lecture that explores a current school focus on testing, and how educators can use their teaching in the service of social justice.

ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ elected to Phi Beta Kappa Society

The Phi Beta Kappa Society, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious academic society, has voted to establish a new chapter at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ. The decision was made Oct. 2 at the Society’s 42nd Triennial Council in Austin, Texas. The 57 ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ faculty and staff who are Phi Beta Kappa members will receive a charter, and the chapter will be officially established in spring 2010. ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ’s formal application for the chapter was submitted in November 2006 by Russell Gill, Maude Sharpe Powell Professor of English and chair of the faculty’s Phi Beta Kappa Committee.
ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ student featured in African hospital report

Andrea Dorrow, an economics and business major and one of the inaugural Lumen Scholars, was featured in the annual report of the Beit CURE International Hospital in Malawi. As part of her Lumen Scholar research, Dorrow spent time in the southeast African country studying the role that minimal healthcare plays in determining the economic health of a developing nation.
