Quilted artwork by an ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ junior was unveiled on Feb. 17 in a School of Education afternoon reception featuring the student and the Winter Term instructor who inspired her project.

ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ faculty members Carolyn Stuart and Mary Knight-McKenna, along with ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ special education majors Jordan McNeill and Kristen Marcickiewicz, made a presentation on Feb. 3 at the North Carolina Council for Exceptional Children (NC-CEC) conference.

An organization that represents private colleges in North Carolina has awarded ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ a grant of nearly $15,000 to fund a summer program for students about to graduate from local high schools and who make up the inaugural class of the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Academy college access program.

There may be no better way of encouraging children to read than by allowing them to choose a stack of new books for their home collections. On Wednesday evening, with the help of ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ students, that’s just what 22 elementary school students did with their tutors from the School of Education.

This month, ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ students from Dave Gammon's Science Without Borders class presented museum-style science demos to approximately 100 fourth-graders from ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Elementary School.

Darris Means, assistant director of the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Academy, presented a session on the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Academy on Nov. 8 at the Southern Association for College Student Affairs Annual Conference in Panama City, Florida.

Alexa Darby, assistant professor of psychology, Richard Mihans, assistant professor of education and four former ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ students—Kirsten Gonzalez, Mary Lyons, Julie Goldstein and Kelly Anderson— had their paper, "The Influence of School Socioeconomic Status on First-Year Teachers’ Emotions," accepted for publication in Research in Education.

North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue has appointed School of Education Dean David Cooper to the Governor’s Education Transformation Commission, a new board of influential leaders who will advise the governor on the use of federal “Race to the Top” funds for implementing the “Career and College: Ready, Set, Go! Initiative” across North Carolina.

Assistant professor Jeff Carpenter in the School of Education recently presented to an audience of pre- and in-service teachers at the North Carolina English Teacher Association's Annual Conference at Wake Forest University.

Amanda Ketner, a senior mathematics major, won the Outstanding Mathematics Education Student Award for the Central Region at the 40th annual conference of the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics held Oct. 28-29 in Greensboro, N.C.
