Gifted students work with M.Ed. candidates in new program

The grassy area in front of Mooney doubled as a hospital ward, battleground and infirmary Tuesday morning as several academically gifted students enrolled in ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ’s inaugural Formative Learning Experience program – “FLEX” for short – learned about first aid and took turns dramatizing emergency situations.

It takes more than cardboard and trash bags to make a boat that can cross Lake Mary Nell. Mathematics, physics and engineering play a role in the process, too, as scholars in the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ Academy discovered Thursday afternoon when they set sail across the pond as part of the “Challenges in Engineering” course offered this summer in the academic enrichment program for Alamance County teenagers.
Visiting Fulbright scholar joins School of Education

Kamol Jiyankhodjaev will be joining the faculty of the School of Education at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ this month as a visiting Fulbright scholar from Uzbekistan. His Fulbright award is a joint appointment with Teacher’s College of Columbia University and the School of Education at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ.

“If you’re 7 years old, how many more years before you can come to ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ?” That was one of many questions School of Education Dean David Cooper asked second graders Tuesday at McDougle Elementary School in Carrboro, N.C., when he visited to share stories and information about the university as part of the school’s “go to college” mission.

Professor’s original play “Valued Voices” to be performed this weekend

An original play written by assistant professor Jean Rohr will be performed April 30-May 2, 2010, by the North Carolina Black Repertory Company in Winston-Salem. Members of the company's Teen Theatre Ensemble will bring to life the intricate examination of the educational experience confronting some African-American males today.
