Creating opportunities for every student to engage globally

From 2020–2025, the GEC’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategic Plan provided a framework for strengthening access, equity, care, and belonging across global engagement. Through this work, the GEC deepened its understanding of student participation and experiences, strengthened partnerships across campus and with international partners, and expanded opportunities for faculty, staff, and program leaders to develop their capacity to support students.

With the completion of the strategic plan, this work continues through annual goals that allow the GEC to build upon its progress while responding to the evolving needs of students. Current priorities include student engagement, identity-based programming and resources, ongoing professional development for GEC staff and program leaders, and continued assessment of policies, practices, and programs.

The GEC’s student-centered advising philosophy further carries this work forward by articulating how we seek to engage with and support students throughout their global learning journeys. Grounded in cultural humility, a strengths-based approach, and holistic student development, the philosophy emphasizes collaborative advising relationships that honor students’ individuality and lived experiences, foster reflection and autonomy, and create spaces where students feel welcomed, respected, and supported.
