Congratulations on making the decision to study abroad! Studying away is a big step, and ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ is here to support you as you embark on this journey. Preparing well and utilizing your resources will help you to maximize your experience.

Preparing for your experience:

• Obtain your passport (or renew!) – It is important to work on obtaining a passport early. You can visit the  for more information. If you already have a passport, be sure the expiration date is at least six months beyond the end date of your program.
• Make a budget – Studying away comes with some expenses. Be sure to understand the cost of your program (including out of pocket costs!) Create a budget for yourself and be sure to factor in spending money! ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ’s website has a financial planning page, and advisors are always happy to talk about budgeting and scholarship opportunities.
• Packing – There are many great study abroad . You can also reach out to past study away students (such as ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ’s Global Ambassadors) to get their insight!
• Include your family in the planning process. Go over materials together and discuss plans for communication while abroad.

Tips for making the most of your experience:

• Utilize your support networks (engage other students who have done the program before, support at your host program, etc.)
• Make connections with locals – onsite staff can help connect you with other students or community members in your area. If applicable, language exchanges can be a great way to meet new people!
• Seek out new experiences – Study abroad is an experience in itself, but did you know you can participate in experiential learning while abroad? Many programs offer opportunities for service learning, internships, and/or research. Are you involved with something at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ that you love? See if there are opportunities to continue that work abroad, or do something completely new!

Returning from study abroad can bring new opportunities—and new questions about how to make the most of your experience. Whether you are reconnecting with campus, thinking about your career, or considering your next global opportunity, these resources can help you reflect on your experience and take your next steps.

• Reflect on your experience: Attend a returnee workshop or advising session to process your experience, navigate the transition back to campus, and identify how you have grown.
• Connect with other students: Share your experiences, find support, and connect with students who are considering studying abroad.
• Connect your experience to your career: Meet with the Student Professional Development Center to learn how to highlight skills you developed abroad—such as adaptability, intercultural communication, problem-solving, and independence—on your résumé, LinkedIn profile, and in interviews.
• Explore future global opportunities: Talk with study abroad or fellowship advisors about international internships, scholarships, graduate study, teaching, research, or work abroad.
• Stay connected to first-generation resources: First Gen Student Services can connect you with academic, financial, career, and community resources as you transition back to campus.
• Share what you learned: Consider becoming a Global Ambassador, speaking at an information session, or connecting with other first-generation students who may be wondering whether studying abroad is possible for them.

Your Experience Continues

Your study abroad experience does not end when you return. The skills, relationships, and perspectives you gained abroad can continue to shape your academic, professional, and personal goals.
