This page is designed for faculty, staff, or student leaders who facilitate peer mentor training across campus. Whether you are training a new cohort of peer mentors or enhancing an existing training program, these resources are intended to promote a shared language and common expectations for peer mentoring at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ while allowing each program to adapt to its own context and learning outcomes.

Group Training Series

The Peer Mentoring at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ training materials are organized into three parts that can be used together as a series or adapted to fit an existing training program. We recommend beginning with Parts 1 and 2 before selecting the Part 3 skill modules that best align with your program goals.

Part 1: Introducing the Peer Mentor Training Framework

Part 1 provides an overview of the Peer Mentor Training Framework, including four competencies, 17 skills, and shared language used across campus. These materials are intended to remain consistent to establish a common foundation across all peer mentor programs.

Part 2: Connecting Peer Mentoring to Your Program

Part 2 helps trainers incorporate peer mentoring within the context of their program. These customizable materials allow you to define peer mentoring expectations and goals that align with your program while reinforcing the shared framework.

Part 3: Skill Development Modules

Part 3 offers trainers the option to select individual peer mentoring skills most relevant to their mentors’ responsibilities, interests, and development. Trainers can select skills based on results from the Mentor Self-Assessment (see Assessment Tools below). These materials are intended to remain consistent to establish a common foundation across all peer mentor programs.

Assessment Tools

Self-assessment and reflection are integral to the development of student peer mentors. The Peer Mentor Self-Assessment helps mentors reflect on their current confidence in the competencies and skills within the Peer Mentor Training Framework. Mentors rate their confidence level with each skill and identify the areas they would most like to develop, providing valuable information to guide individual and group training.

Choose the format that works best for your program:

  • : Trainers create a copy of the questionnaire for their own program and share the link for peer mentors to complete online. Trainers will be able to view individual and aggregate results to identify common strengths and development needs across the group. Peer mentors have the option to receive a copy of their responses by email.
  • : Peer mentors can fill in their responses or print and complete the questionnaire on paper. Trainers collect responses to inform future training sessions and discussions.
