Preparing your courses in Canvas begins with migrating your Moodle content.

The time needed to prepare each course will vary based on its design, content, and use of Moodle features. Training, migration support, and consultation opportunities are available as you work.

After logging in for the first time, as part of setting up your Canvas account. Your account will not be fully functional until you do.

Step 1: Migrate your course from Moodle to Canvas

One of the first steps in preparing your course is moving your content from Moodle into Canvas. You can follow step-by-step guidance in either platform; choose the option that works best for you:

If you’re preparing multiple courses, working through one migration at a time can help make the process more manageable and give you an opportunity to apply what you learn to your remaining courses.

What to expect

All Canvas courses include ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ course templates designed to help you organize your course materials clearly for your students. You can customize these templates to meet your needs. Moving your course from Moodle to Canvas is not a one-to-one transfer.

  • Most content (files, assignments, basic structure) will transfer
  • Some elements may need review or adjustment
  • You’ll have an opportunity to reorganize and refine your course in Canvas

Migration is the starting point. After your content transfers, take time to review how it appears and make any adjustments needed before students begin using the course.

Once your content is in Canvas, we recommend starting with:

  • Course structure and organization
  • Assignments and grading setup
  • Links and embedded content
  • Any activities that may not transfer cleanly

Small adjustments over time will make your course feel more natural in Canvas.
