Cassidy Benullo came to ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ ready to get the most out of her college experience. A music theatre major with minors in dance, psychology, exercise science and music production, Cassidy is pursuing all of her interests. ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ’s small classes, supportive mentors and endless opportunities allow her to explore and thrive. Her story shows what happens when passion meets purpose at a university built for both.
Genesis Tolbert, a biochemistry major and Odyssey Program scholar, worked with her mentor to research the impact that products such as handheld sparklers have on people’s health. Her efforts landed her a scholarship from the National Institutes of Health Undergraduate Scholar Program.
Nick Muller, an engineering major and an Honors Program participant, co-founded Phoenix Racing, a team of engineering majors that designed and built a Formula 1 electric race car.
Kaley Katz, a biology major, spent her childhood participating in bone marrow drives after a transplant cured her cousin. Kaley continued those drives at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ and researched ASXL1 protein variations in leukemic cell lines to prepare for a career in genetic counseling.
Matt Newberry, a communication design and Spanish major, takes on leadership roles in ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ clubs and organizations and studies abroad in Spain to prepare for professional opportunities.
Nailah Ware, a music and recording arts major, expands her music production company, makes connections and trademarks stage name while at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ.
Mallory Poff, an engineering major and percussionist, wanted to be in an engineering program that allowed her to experience more than just STEM classes. While at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ, Mallory designed and built a solar-powered cooling unit, tutored, volunteered, studied abroad and was a drum major leading the marching band.
Bill Powers ’13, a strategic communications major, develops global brand campaigns for Havas. As a first-year student at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ, Bill participated in organizations that exposed him to various communications fields. Those experiences helped him choose his major with confidence.
Carl Hairston ’11 G’15 used the knowledge gained through his marketing major and sport management minor to work his way up to associate commissioner for marketing and content strategy at the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in Charlotte.
Ryan Vet ’13, a marketing major, learned how to lead and manage his employees through his experiences and work with faculty and staff. The entrepreneur, who opened the ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ Oak House and the Oak House Durham, now provides the same mentorship to students through his work on the advisory board for the Doherty Center for Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business.
